Marma Chikitsa

Marma Therapy is potentially the most restorative of the Ayurveda treatments as it harmonizes the body’s built-in energy network. Marma is a technique in which simple touch or light massage on the vital points of the body (the marma points) are used to balance the life force (prana).

How does the marma therapy work?

The ancient definition of marma points, handed down to us through the centuries, is specifically “the various points on the body where the subtle life energy becomes matter, where thoughts transfer into the physical realm”. They are junction points in the body, fundamental built-in electrical switches.

Mental stresses cloud or obstruct the subtle channels in the body, reducing the flow of energy. The blocks formed in the energy channels due to emotions and subtle feelings are the cause of many diseases. A gentle touch on the Marma points releases the blocks, allowing life energy to flow to the connecting organs or tissues. This renewed flow of energy, in turn, energizes the organs.

Benefits

  • Removes blocks in energy channels called nadis, thus healing the subtle and physical body.
  • Pacifies Vata dosha, (air and space elements), bringing it to its normal path — especially vyana vata, (a sub-dosha which controls the autonomic nervous system.)
  • Brings harmony among physical, mental and emotional aspects by removing deep-seatezd trauma. (At marma sites toxins, stress and negative emotions get lodged and are held sometimes for years.)
  • Brings about the transformation at the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. The prana flow once established, can control our sensory & motor organs, and eventually the entire mind-body complex.
